Lines

The art of creating lines

Let’s assume you haven’t drawn a lot in your life. Or even you are familiar with pen and paper or other drawing tools, I want you (re-)start with a very small “object” in drawing: The simple line.

The line can define a contour of an object or several lines in combination are used to create the texture of a surface.  With lines you can also create perspective and add mass to you drawing.

Therefore it is very important to create „clean“ lines the way you want to draw them. The following easy exerises will help to get familiar with drawing lines and even with the canvas and tools you are going to work with (pdf download for print).

Creating lines

For the following exercises define a area (rectangle, square, square) and do not cross the border of this area. Wehave add additional exercises in the free pdf .

Exercise 1

Draw one continous line. Just let your hand flow.

Exercise 1

Just draw random lines in a special a defined area. Just do not cross the border of the area you defined.

Creating patterns with lines

For this exercise draw some patterns and try to get the single elements as evenly as possible. Ypu will find additonal exercises in the free pdf.

Observing the contour line

Our first building block is learning to observe and bring the edge of the object to paper. The line represents the border to another object or is created when two object overlap or collide. This edge is called the contour of the object
